Hamiltonian Gallery hosts 'Call + Response' exhibit
Friday, January 22, 2010
To create its new show, "Call + Response," opening Saturday night, Hamiltonian Gallery and curators William Bert and Kira Wisniewski enlisted 16 local writers to create short works (the call) and then asked 16 artists to pick one writing and issue the response through visual art.
And so the poet Eleanor Graves's work "Gorgeous Evasions" is met with Lam Vuong's photographic work depicting one gorgeous explosion. Other pairings: Dan Brady, former editor of American Poet, with painter Rachel Crouch; college writing and poetry teacher Wade Fletcher and painter Magnolia Laurie; and Matt Klam, author of the short story collection "Sam the Cat," and Anthony Dihle, an illustrator and curator of a recent rock-music posters exhibition.
The show, which runs through Feb. 13, opens Saturday night with a reception featuring free beer from Frederick's Flying Dog Brewery. 7-9 p.m. 1353 U St. NW. 202-332-1116 or http://www.callandresponsedc.org. Free.
