About

a post-doc for emerging artists

Hamiltonian Artists was founded in 2007, by Paul So, an avid painter and physics professor at George Mason University. As a scientist in a highly competitive field, Paul So appreciated the tremendous benefits of his own post-doctoral training and saw great potential in applying a similar combination of mentorship, career guidance and financial support to the early career trajectory of emerging artists.

Hamiltonian Artists is a 501(c)3 and dedicated to building a dynamic community of innovative artists by advancing their professional development and furthering their entrepreneurial success. We provide emerging artists with the critical skills and resources to launch and sustain a successful career in the arts.

Our innovative career development programs blend the traditional lines between the nonprofit and commercial art world to better facilitates the artist’s transition into a professional art career. In partnership with Hamiltonian Gallery, a prominent, commercial exhibition space in the heart Washington, DC, we effectively raises the profile and enhances the quality of local emerging artists through a comprehensive suite of professional exhibition opportunities, mentorship, career-training workshops and resources.

Over the course of two years, all fellowship recipients exhibit their work professionally in the gallery and at art fairs. They gain practical experience in the business side of the arts and learn to be proactive and self-reliant in advancing their art career. Throughout their fellowship, the artists also build active professional networks and gain visibility and experience that help them realize their long-term career aspirations.

Over time, Hamiltonian has become an essential destination for emerging artists and a vibrant center for contemporary art. Together, the nonprofit and the gallery are invested in nurturing the next generation of cutting-edge artists and elevating Washington, DC into a pulsating center for contemporary art.

We believe that experience and access to information on how to navigate the contemporary art industries creates confident artists who make well-informed decisions regarding their careers, and who will then, in turn, have sustainable careers that positively impact the creative economy in the greater Washington metropolitan area.
