FAQ

Who should apply?

The program is open to early-career visual artists 21-years-old or older. Applicants may not be enrolled in any full-time degree program or equivalent. Artists from anywhere are eligible to apply but should consider the strong participatory nature of the fellowship program, and the limited financial support available.

Ideal candidates exhibit artistic vision and are at a point in their art career where they would significantly benefit from the professional development Hamiltonian Artists could provide. They have a clear understanding of their work and its context within and outside of the art world, an established practice, and sense of their goals. They are interested in working with a cohort of Fellows and offering support to a tightknit community of artists in DC and surrounding areas. They understand and accept the responsibilities and benefits that an opportunity like this affords and are willing to give their time and energy as they receive the time and energy of their peers and the program.

Is a graduate degree or art degree required, to apply?

No. You must have an established studio practice and a clear understanding of your goals. Your work needs to convey artistic vision and you should be at a point in your artistic career where you will significantly benefit from the professional development we can provide.

What kind of art are you looking for?

No preference is given to any kind of work. We consider all artists, who work in a variety of mediums, in order to form a dynamic cohort.

How long is the fellowship?

Two years

Is there a financial award or stipend?

Yes. Each fellow receives an annual honorarium of $2,000. Additional funds may be provided for group travel and exhibition expenses.

Do you provide housing?

Artists are responsible for their own housing.

Do you provide studio space?

We have limited studio space available to fellows.

If you don’t provide housing or studio space, what exactly do you provide?

We offer a full spectrum of professional support, exhibition opportunities, professional development, community, and access to established arts professionals locally and nationally. Please see full list of benefits on about page.

Do you have to live in Washington, DC?

The Fellowship is open to artists from anywhere, but due to the intensive time commitment required (see list of requirements), the artist must be located in or near DC for the full duration of the Fellowship.

What happens if I begin the program and then have to move far away from DC or if I get a residency that takes me away for months at a time?

In accepting admission to Hamiltonian Artists, artists agree to participate in the full two-years of programming. For this reason, Fellows who are not able to attend programs on a regular basis and are consistently absent from events and programs will forfeit their participation in the program.

What are my responsibilities?

Please see the list of requirements on the About page.

Is there a fee to apply?

$20.
